Overview

The Computer Operator - 2nd Shift is responsible for running the scheduled evening job workload on the company's IBM Mainframe. Working part-time hours in the afternoon and evening, the operator runs scheduled jobs in the correct sequence, monitors them to completion, verifies output, and takes corrective action or escalates when a job fails. This role requires reliability, consistency, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Run the scheduled evening job workload on the IBM Mainframe in the correct sequence, ensuring all required jobs complete successfully before the end of the shift.
• Monitor job execution and system consoles, responding to prompts, messages, and abnormal terminations.
• Take corrective action on job failures using documented restart procedures; escalate to the Senior Operations Administrator or on-call staff when an issue is outside documented procedures.
• Perform daily backups of data files and servers and monthly operating system backups, confirming successful completion and handling backup media as required.
• Prepare peripheral equipment with forms, tapes, and other media as needed.
• Assist with off-hours computer problems and communicate effectively with users to resolve after-hours issues.
• Maintain an accurate shift log and hand-off notes documenting jobs run, exceptions, and actions taken.
• Follow established operating instructions and report gaps or errors in documentation so procedures stay current.
• Support end of month, quarter, and year processing as scheduled.
• React to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
• Perform all other duties appropriate to the position as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field a plus.
• One to two years of computer operations experience, or equivalent technical experience.
• Ability to follow written operating instructions and start procedures accurately and consistently.
• Basic troubleshooting skills and sound judgment about when to take corrective action and when to escalate.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work with users and on-call staff to resolve after-hours issues.
• Dependable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Availability to work a part-time afternoon/evening schedule, with some flexibility around month-end, quarter-end, and year-end processing.

 

Special Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to learn and use the company's job management and scheduling tools.
• Comfortable using standard office computing tools, email, and the help desk system for communication and documentation.
• Prior mainframe or batch job processing experience preferred but not required.

 

Physical Environmental Factors:
• Work in office setting using telephone, computer, and other office machines.
